Why I blog & why you should too.
Blogging is not only good for the soul…Part 1.
Every time a new form of social media pops up, we as busy wedding photographers are are told that we should / have to be doing it.
And on the whole, this is absolutely true. However, there is absolutely no point in investing time and effort into ‘another’ social media trend, unless you also invest the time and effort into measuring the ROI.
And as a new social media trend looms, we all drop the core basics and the cornerstones of our marketing and look to use the new guy on the social media block.
Wedding photographers will devote time to the usuals, and begin to neglect their site and more importantly their site’s content, especially blogging.
I’ve heard every excuse as to why as wedding photographers we should’t blog, we shouldn’t help or share information and advice, or worse still those that blog simply to try and get higher up the natural listings. Don’t get me wrong, one of the main reasons I blog is to help with my SEO, but that’s not the only reason, it’s not even thee most important reason.
You’ll never out think Google, so write for you and write for your potential clients… Don’t simply write what you believe Google is looking for.
Why wedding photographers should blog
I blog, because as a creative person I need to show my work and express how I feel about my work. My site doesn’t get ‘Amazon’ amounts of visits, but the visits that it does get are quite targeted. And I feel that my blog helps with that. I enjoy opening up in conversations about my wedding photography, I want to share tips and tricks and I need to showcase my work.
Also, I love it when a potential bride tells me about how sorry she was to hear about Elsa, or how they are now looking to book a different venue because of one of my little excited write ups. I must admit, you start writing posts and you just never think (or hope) that someone out there is reading it, so it is a thrill to hear that someone bothered.
What I am saying here is that my blog lets my clients know a little bit about me; it gives them an insight into my little world… and hopefully, I connect with the kind of people that want me to be at their wedding photographer.
With regards to blogging and why we ‘should’ blog for SEO purposes, Dom, a friend of mine, who owns a brilliant wedding business called Rocks and Frocks, summed it up brilliantly. “If you can’t be bothered adding new content and updating your website, then why should Google bother with your site too?”
See Dom, I was listening and those words really rang true with me.
So, I urge you all whether you be a wedding photographer, a cake maker (R&G – I’m thinking of you here), a tinker, tailor soldier or even a magician, BLOG.
Blog about what’s important to you, blog about what you want to say, blog about the fun stuff and the sad stuff… Get it of your chest and share! Because I promise, if you write it, they will come.
Coming soon, another blog post (Part II) all about how I blog and the basic fundamentals I use.
